Шарманов Торегельды Шарманович
Toregeldy Sharmanov is an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the president of the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition and Academy of Preventive Medicine, also the president of the National Center for Healthy Eating, MD, professor, honored worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the winner of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the independent award "Platinum Tarlan". He was awarded orders and medals of the USSR and the Republic of Kazakhstan such as "Friendship", "October Revolution", "Parasat" and "Dostyk".
Toregeldy Sharmanov was born on the 19th of October, 1930 in Ulytau village of Karaganda region. In 1955 he graduated from Karaganda State Medical Institute and enrolled in graduate school at the Department of Pharmacology of this Institute. From 1958 till 1962 he worked as the chief doctor of Ulytau district hospital in Karaganda region. Then, he worked as a head of the Research Institute Department of the Regional Pathology of the Kazakh SSR Ministry of Health in Alma-Ata (1962-1968), and for three years as a rector of Aktobe State Medical Institute and the head of pharmacology department.
From 1971 till 1982 Toregeldy Sharmanov was the minister of Health of the Kazakh SSR. At the same time he served as director of the Kazakh branch of the Institute of Nutrition Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR established on his initiative. He headed the department of nutrition of Almaty State Institute (1983-1985) and, then, (1985-1988) the department of Nutrition of Central Order of Lenin Institute for clinical laboratory vitaminology and is also the chief editor Union journal "Nutrition".
Toregeldy Sharmanovich’s name is associated with the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition, the president of which he has been since the foundation. Institute of Nutrition, established by him, now is a major scientific institution with a wide range of fundamental and applied fields of hygiene, biochemistry, immunology and physiology of nutrition and dietetics.
But for the global medical community Toregeldy Sharmanov is the one who initiated and organized, in 1978, in Alma-Ata the International Conference on Primary Health Care under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Children's Fund (UNICEF) with the participation of official representatives of 146 countries.
It should be noted that 27 years after the Conference in Alma-Ata, the award of the World Health Organization "found" his hero. In 2005, for his outstanding contribution to world health, Toregeldy Sharmanov on the WHO Assembly in Geneva was awarded the highest award – medal named after Leon Bernard (only 43 people in the world are awarded it).
Toregeldy Sharmanov is the founder of the nutritionists’ school in Kazakhstan and the Central Asian republics. He is the head of the international research projects on the elimination of iron deficiency anemia, iodine deficiency, breastfeeding support, health and demographic research.
Under his leadership, there was organized the Center for children's food that has no analogues in the CIS and also introduced into medical practice new baby food prophylactic. In 2010 in Kazakhstan, under his leadership, there was created a unique plant in Central Asia for the production of baby food "Plant of Kazakh Academy of Nutrition" Amiran "".
As one of the most respected figures in the scientific and medical world, Toregeldy Sharmanov pays great attention to the comprehensive development of practical public health, medical science and training system. 36 doctoral and 123 master's dissertations were defended under his guidance. Moreover, he is the author of more than 360 publications, including 49 monographs and 46 inventions. He was elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan three times.
